Raffia, a story of material

Raffia is drawn from the fronds of Raphia farinifera, native to Madagascar, where the fibres are extracted and dried using know-how passed down through generations. Supple and resilient, this plant tie was long used to stake young shoots in the garden before making its way into florists', dressmakers' and craftspeople's workshops. At Maison Douineau, we select quality raffia, as valuable for its practical uses as for its creative potential.

Our raffia: uses and applications

Our range distinguishes florist-grade natural raffia, finer and ideal for decoration and delicate ties; seat-grade natural raffia, sturdier and suited to chair re-seating; and repacked raffia, as reels, skeins, ribbon or fabric, for every creative idea. It is found in the garden as a natural tie, as well as in basketry, weaving or accessory-making.

Choosing and storing your raffia

Quality is chosen according to use: florist raffia for decoration and delicate ties, seat raffia for demanding re-seating work. Natural or dyed, raffia is worked dry, with no special preparation. To keep it, store it away from moisture and direct light, somewhere dry, to preserve its suppleness and the brightness of its colours.
