Harvested from marshes and coastal areas, sea grass — also known as marsh grass — is a twisted plant fibre long used to re-seat the rustic chairs of seaside homes. Its irregular texture and natural tone give it an authentic charm, somewhere between traditional straw and a more contemporary material. At Maison Douineau, we select it for its strength as much as for its low environmental impact.

Our sea grass: uses and applications

This fibre from our natural fibre and paper yarn family is mainly used to re-seat chairs, stools and armchairs, giving a natural, textured finish. It also suits more creative decoration projects: woven cushions, baskets, or decorative pieces that play on its raw tone and irregular grain.

Choosing and caring for your sea grass

Choice is mainly guided by the thickness of the twist and the weave density wanted for the seat being re-covered. Before weaving, a light soak in water softens the fibre and makes it easier to tension onto the frame. Once the seat is finished, sea grass is simply cleaned with a slightly damp cloth, avoiding prolonged exposure to excess moisture.
