Paper yarn is born from a simple but precise gesture: twisting several strands — of paper or plant fibre — to form a supple, resilient cord. This technique, inherited from traditional re-seating workshops, reproduces the look and hold of hand-woven straw, in a more regular, easier-to-work format. At Maison Douineau, we select this yarn for its wear resistance as much as for its authentic look.

Our paper yarn: uses and applications

This fibre from our natural fibre and paper yarn family comes in several tones, from natural to red and green, to suit every restoration project. It is mainly used for re-seating and caning chairs, but also for craft projects: decorative cording, ties, or finishing touches for your willow or rattan work.

Choosing and working with your paper yarn

The yarn's diameter is chosen according to the seat's style and the weave density wanted: a fine yarn for a tight pattern, thicker for a more rustic look. Before fitting, a light soak in water softens the cord and makes it easier to tension onto the frame. Once the seat is finished, the yarn holds up well over time, kept away from excess moisture.
