The caning needle, what is it for?

An essential tool for the craftsperson, the caning needle catches and guides the fibres through the holes of the frame when caning and re-seating chairs and armchairs. It is used for restoring antique seats, precision work, furniture renovation and fine basketry with soft fibres (seagrass, rattan pith).

Using it well

Choose the needle length suited to the depth of your frame. Made of stainless steel, it withstands the moisture of soaked fibres. Note: for basketry, the caning needle is often too fine—willow rods and rattan canes are generally worked by hand.
