The soft heart of rattan. Drawn from the centre of the vine, natural rattan pith (premium grade) is spongy and soft, and becomes very malleable after soaking. Craftspeople use it to fix caning, for basketry, baskets and seat fillings.

Natural rattan pith, the ally of craftspeople

Rattan pith is used to fix caning, for basketry work, to make baskets and trays, and to fill the seats of chairs and armchairs. Available in several diameters (from 1 to 22 mm), it suits the finest work as well as furniture pieces, bringing a natural touch to your creations.

A material malleable after soaking

Spongy and soft, the pith becomes very supple once soaked in water, which makes weaving, lashings and decorative finishes easy. Rattan, from a vine that can reach impressive lengths, remains a living material: its shade may evolve slightly over time. Dusting with a soft cloth is enough for care.

Premium-grade rattan, sourced since 1850

Selected in Indonesia for its strength, even colour and consistent gauge, our rattan pith embodies the Maison Douineau standard since 1850. To learn caning and weaving, find our step-by-step guides in Our advice and our ideas in the Vannerie DIY universe.
