20/22 to 30/32 mm in diameter and 2.75 to 2.90 m long, Malacca rattan is used mainly in the production of indoor furniture—chairs, armchairs, sofas, shelves. Appreciated for its raw colour and visible nodes, it also lends itself to making terrace fences and outdoor fit-out.

A living material to work

A living, biodegradable material, rattan may show variations in colour from one piece to another. The silica in its bark gives it a unique gloss and strength, much appreciated by furniture makers. To work it, take advantage of its suppleness after heating and keep it away from air that is too dry.
